Getting Your Marriage License



Getting your marriage license is a necessary step to take before the big day! I have outlined a step by step guide below so that it is as easy as possible!



WHEN?

Apply for your marriage license within 1 month before your wedding date. It is valid for 30 days. There is no waiting period for marriage licenses.


WHERE?

You must apply in person at any Missouri County Recorder of Deeds Office. You can apply at any location within the state. You must obtain your license from the state you will be getting married in. The location of the Recorder of Deeds varies based on county. Search for the closest one to you and check their hours and if they require an appointment. Linked below are some of the nearby county pages. You can find their application process, business hours, and location from there. 


WHAT WILL YOU NEED TO BRING?

Each of you will need to bring:

 Government ID

Social Security Number (card not required)

Money for the filing fee

Divorce decree if either party was previously married


NEXT STEPS

  1. You will be issued your marriage license immediately

  2. Keep it in a safe place until your wedding day

  3. Your officiant will sign your marriage license on the day of the wedding

  4. It must be returned to the Recorder of Deeds within 15 days. This is typically done by your officiant.

  5. Request a certified copy of your marriage license where you applied (typically requires a fee of $10-$15


TIMELINE RECAP

30 Days Prior → Apply for your marriage license

Wedding Day → Get married & have your officiant sign

Within 15 Days → Your officiant will file 

After license is filed → Request certified copy
