Everything You Should Know Before Your Rehearsal

The rehearsal is more than just a formality. It is your opportunity to set the tone for the day, make sure everyone knows their role, and address small details that can prevent stress and confusion on the wedding day. When done thoughtfully, a rehearsal can make your ceremony feel seamless and ensure your wedding party is confident and comfortable!

  1. Start With the Ceremony Layout

Begin by walking through the ceremony setup. Place everyone where they will be standing or sitting during the ceremony, and make sure each person is comfortable in their spot. This is the time to adjust spacing, check sightlines, and confirm that everyone understands where they belong.

  1. Practice the Processional

Once everyone is in position, line up at the back to go through the full processional. Decide on a cue for when the next person should start walking. A method I like is having each person begin when the person in front of them reaches the middle of the aisle, but any consistent cue works. Time the processional with your music. Ideally, your DJ can attend, but if not, you can play the songs on your phone. Practicing with the actual music helps your wedding party get a feel for pacing and flow.

  1. Walk Through the Ceremony

After the processional, have the officiant go through the ceremony details. This gives everyone a clear understanding of how the ceremony will unfold and their role in each moment.

  1. Cover Key Day-of Details While Still in Place

With everyone still positioned, review practical tips for the day. This assures you have their full attention before the fun of the evening begins! Go over:

  • Standing positions: Ladies hold bouquets at belly button height, and men place hands left over right.

  • Bouquet and dress adjustments: Maid of honor or helpers take charge of fluffing dresses and holding bouquets.

  • Gentle reminder: Remind the wedding party not to wear smart watches or carry phones in pockets.

  • Preparation reminders: Encourage steaming or pressing clothes the night before.

  • Day-of timeline: Walk through the day-of timeline and highlight when they should arrive and when they should be fully ready for photos.

  • Post-ceremony instruction: Make sure to tell your wedding party where they should be directly following their ceremony exit. Should they gather at a waiting place to be ready for photos?

  1. PRACTICE A CELEBRATORY EXIT

End by practicing the ceremony exit! This brightens the mood with a fun spirit.

  1. Enjoy the rest of your evening

Structuring your rehearsal in this way allows you to run through the processional one time and communicate everything you need to with your wedding party and family members!

Why the Rehearsal Matters

Taking the time to carefully walk through the ceremony, processional, and key day-of details reduces anxiety and eliminates confusion. By practicing and communicating expectations, your wedding party will feel confident, the ceremony will flow naturally, and you can focus on enjoying your special day.
